In the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Case School of Engineering, we offer an accredited Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree with a major in Civil Engineering, composed of courses in almost all the traditional civil engineering subjects. Our graduate program offers the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in structure, geotechnical or environmental engineering and engineering mechanics. And, if you’re interested in more hands-on study, a cooperative education program involving participating engineering firms is available for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Thanks to our active research program, our students have plenty of opportunities to participate in projects related to design, analysis, and testing. Projects are in areas such as computational mechanics, probabilistic design, bridges, dynamics and wind engineering, response of concrete and steel structures, fracture mechanics, static and dynamic behavior of soils, earthquake engineering, subsurface and ex-situ remediation, colloid behavior in environmental systems, and contaminated sediment dynamics.

Choose the Civil Engineering degree that's right for you

We are commited to ensuring our civil engineering students graduate our program having acquired fundamental skills across several categories:

Mastery of Fundamentals

  • Graduates will master the fundamentals of mathematics and the sciences that form the basis for engineering.
  • Graduates will have a thorough knowledge of the technical requirements for the practice of the profession of civil engineering and be prepared for advanced scholarship.

Creativity

  • Graduates will be proficient in state-of-the-art analytical and computational techniques for the modeling, analysis and design of civil engineering systems, with opportunities for individualized research experience.

Societal Awareness

  • Graduates will have an understanding of the legal, social economic and environmental constraints within which the civil engineering profession must operate.
  • Graduates will be aware of the special role the profession of civil engineering plays in the protection of the public health, safety and welfare.

Leadership Skills

  • Graduates will be aware of the moral and ethical standards expected of leaders in the profession of civil engineering.
  • Graduates will be able to function effectively and lead professional teams as well as work independently.

Professionalism

  • Graduates will be aware of the moral and ethical standards expected of leaders in the profession of civil engineering.
  • Graduates will be prepared for and aware of the necessity for a lifetime of learning and continued professional growth including professional registration

Rationale for Curriculum

We expect our students to take leadership roles during their professional careers. We do not believe it is possible for our graduates to be leaders either technically or in management, if they do not have a firm grasp of the science and engineering fundamentals that underlie the practice of civil engineering.

Furthermore, it would be irresponsible to give students the tools for leadership without simultaneously giving them guidance in how to deal with the ethical and social issues in which that leadership will be exercised. Finally, it would be difficult for our students to be leaders if they do not leave here prepared to rapidly become valuable, creative professionals in the contemporary workplace. These factors underlie our civil engineering curriculum.

Accreditation

The Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree program with a major in Civil Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, www.abet.org, under the commission’s General Criteria and Program Criteria for Civil and Similarly Named Engineering Programs.
