Research Associate Positions in Computational Imaging and Machine Learning

The Center for Computational Imaging and Personalized Diagnostics (CCIPD) at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) is seeking talented and motivated postdoctoral Research Associates.

A successful candidate for a Research Associate position would have a PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field and have a record of accomplishments in artificial intelligence, medical image analysis, neuroimaging, computer vision, or image registration and feature extraction. Candidates should have an interest and expertise in computer science to apply to radiomics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning in the fields of medical imaging, radiology, digital pathology, oncology, cardiovascular disease, nephrology, neurology, and ophthalmology. Experience in programming is preferred with knowledge in MATLAB and Python, statistic, and data analysis being a plus. Applicants must have a PhD and demonstrated excellent qualifications in research.

CCIPD offers an intellectually stimulating environment for students and researchers to develop and apply image-computing solutions to highly translational and clinically relevant problems. Students and researchers work closely with clinical collaborators including radiologists, pathologists, surgeons, and medical and radiation oncologists. The CWRU campus is in the heart of Cleveland and is near four nationally and internationally renowned medical centers – three within a short walk: University Hospitals, Cleveland Clinic, and Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, and a fourth only a short drive from campus: MetroHealth.

Research Associates will work on the development of image analytic/machine learning algorithms for clinical applications. Representative projects within CCIPD include distinguishing normal from disease states for different patient cohorts, ranging from cancers including lung, prostate, breast, rectal, brain, and head and neck to non-oncologic related pathologies like chronic kidney disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cardiac failure, eye disease, and inflammatory bowel diseases. Examples include recurrent brain tumors from post- radiation changes, planning surgical margins in patients undergoing excision for rectal cancers using MRI, and predicting the need of adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer patients, amongst many others.

In the past nine years the center has grown rapidly, now boasting more than 70 members including faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students, and postdoctoral researchers. CCIPD members have received awards from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, and others amounting to more than $50M in federal, state and industry funding. CCIPD researchers have published in high impact journals such as Lancet Oncology, Clinical Cancer Research, Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology, and Nature Reviews Drug Discovery.

CCIPD is heavily involved in translational activities, including pharmaceutical and industry-sponsored research projects, with the goal of bringing new AI tools to clinicians and patients around the world. CCIPD has spawned two startups and has been awarded more than 70 patents – with 15 awarded in 2020 alone. Our research interests include using AI to develop population-specific tools and reduce health disparities.
