While traveling to the United State as an exchange student, Hyeji Im discovered a passion that would guide her life. 

“The engineering mechanisms enabling airplanes to transport hundreds of people through the sky fascinated me, sparking a desire for deeper understanding,” Im, assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, said. 

As an undergraduate student studying materials science and engineering, the materials used in the airplane’s body and engines piqued her interest—especially the engine materials that could withstand such high-temperature environments. Ultimately, this fascination led her to pursue research focused on superalloys—a material used in turbine engines—during graduate school. 

Now, her research hones in on the advanced manufacturing of materials, particularly structural alloys and she is looking to develop stronger materials that are capable of withstanding even more extreme conditions.

What is your favorite thing about engineering?

I love engineering because of its profound impact on our lives. From the internet to mass production and efficient transportation, engineering innovations have significantly improved our daily experiences. I take pride in this positive influence.

What are you most looking forward to at Case Western Reserve University?

I am looking forward to participating in dynamic research activities with undergraduate and graduate students, as well as engaging in collaborative projects with experienced faculty members.

I'm new to Cleveland and excited to discover its hidden gems.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Be present in the moment. Although I've known about this idea since I was young, it took some time for it to truly sink in. Now, it inspires me to immerse myself fully in whatever I'm doing.
